Outcrossing is essential in every purebred breed to ensure
that breeds future, by broadening the gene pool and
strengthening the immune system and vigor in that
breed. The Sphynx is no different and therefore responsible
outcrossing is encouraged.
The Devon Rex was used to outcross with, in the early years
of the Sphynx. This crossing is not a favorable outcross
anymore and most now use the Domestic or the American
Shorthair.
In the first outcross generation, all the kittens will look
like ordinary cats. The best kitten out of this litter will
be bred to a Sphynx again to get F2 kittens....which could
have naked kittens in the litter, as well as hairy kittens.
One of these naked kittens bred to a Sphynx, results in all
naked kittens in a litter. The hairy kittens out of such an
outcross program make extremely lovely pets.
I started with my own outcross program last year (2005).
Each generation, as we go along, will be placed on this
page.
